LEAVING HOME

Parents are the child's legal guardians until age of 18. In Australia there is no law who oblige children to stay home until age of 18.

Leaving home is a big decision because child has to be independent financially and emotionally. Financially child must be able to pay all his/her living expenses as accommodation, food , bills....  and emotionally leaving home isn't an easy decision.

However, no one can force a child to live in a violent or abusive house.

There are many organisations that offers help to children who took the decision to leave their parent's house, e.g.Relationships with Parents - Working it out , Reconnect and Reach out!  and Department of Community Services (DoCS) (NSW)... These are organisations that give advices, offer helping child working things out at home and help the child find accommodation, work, income support... and protect young people from being abused, they can help stop the abuse and, if necessary, they can help get you out of an abusive situation..
